Telehealth

INTRODUCTION

Clinicians at the Defense and Veterans Brain Injury Center use Telemedicine to reach patients in rural and underserved areas and in remote parts of the world.

Widely accepted technologies are employed in innovative ways to assist with TBI identification, acute care and rehabilitation. Examples include:

  • Store and Forward Technology which allows deployed providers in far forward locations to receive expert opinion regarding the care and safety of active duty service members.
  • Interactive Video-TeleConferencing (VTC) which supports medical transitions of patients with moderate to severe TBI as they transfer from Military Medical Centers to VA Polytrauma Centers across the country. A combination of web-based information management and VTC allows clinicians in DVBIC's Virtual TBI Clinic to provide remote screening, assessment, treatment and follow-up care to TBI patients with continuing symptoms.
  • Handheld Technologies are also employed to help TBI case managers and platoon sergeants support the medical goals of national guard and reservists who are on the go.

TELEMEDICINE RESEARCH

Researchers at DVBIC are also exploring web-based social networking, home telehealth, and virtual reality as methods to assist patients with TBI return to their home community.

The DVBIC partners with DoD, VA and civilian healthcare providers to study the efficacy and effectiveness of Telemedicine interventions. Studies are aimed at improving access to care and health outcomes for military and veteran populations.
